Student Spotlights
Varnika Karthick
Class of 2026
Varnika completed a summer program at Chapman Pharmacy School, where she explored various career paths within pharmacy and completed a research project on redox-sensitive ion channels in the cardiac action potential. Varnika attended lectures by pharmacists and researchers on Alzheimer's, myocardial infarction, drug inhibition, and pharmacogenomics. She also engaged in research labs, gaining hands-on experience with mass spectrometers and protein sequencers. Her favorite part of the program was the compounding lab, where she created a gel to treat arthritis and joint pain!
Her advice to other students is that you're never too young to explore your interests, whether they lie in medicine or other fields. It's perfectly fine not to have everything figured out yet, but there are so many opportunities available—don't hesitate to reach out, explore, and try new things!
Madeleine Chang
Class of 2025
This past summer, Madeleine was one of the Youth Science Fellows at UCI Cancer Research Institute. Her favorite part of the experience was working with the Genomics Research and Technology Hub, where she learned how to purify and extract DNA from zebrafish samples using various lab techniques and machines. Over the course of this hands-on, six-week research program, she gained valuable skills, from pipetting to working with genome sequencers.
Madeleine's advice to other students is not to be afraid to ask questions: "Do not be afraid of asking clarifying questions and doing your own external research on a lab's topic. Do not be afraid of asking questions because you are afraid of looking "incompetent". The researchers and mentors are working on complex projects, and this is your chance to learn more about their field. They understand that you are a high school student, so relax! Have fun and embrace the experience because it goes by quickly!"
Olivia Conte
Class of 2024
Olivia Completed a summer surgical program at UCI in their department of Urology and was able to gain invaluable experience viewing live surgeries and modern technology such as the Da Vinci Surgical System.
In addition to medical knowledge Olivia also learned life lessons as she summarizes in her quote: "If you're smart, you're smart, but you need to have a reason and a why."
Her advice for current students is: "Be open to different situations, ask questions. Get the most out of it as you possibly can. Take advantage of it"
